Allergy Wise

Do you sufferer from asthma or eczema and because of that allergy decided to avoid hotels and guest houses so as not to intensify your symptoms

Many allergy sufferers in the UK feel this way and miss out on staying away from home for fear of agitating not only their asthma and eczema, but also conjunctivitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, and rhinitis allergies. To quote allergy specialist Dr Harry Brown MD FRCP (Ed) “patients had an attack of asthma or rhinitis when staying somewhere where dust mites had not been removed.

Hotels will offer you a non smoking room why not an allergy free sleeping environment? By taking this simple step and advertising themselves as “Allergy Wise” they would open up their business up to an untapped market. And Allergy sufferers can enjoy as healthy a nights sleep as they do at home.

Normal vacuuming of the mattress by hotel cleaning staff is not sufficient to remove the mites and proteins and of course it will not kill off the bacteria and fungi that have been proved to exist in the mattress. Non-allergenic pillows are not the answer. A quote from Dr Brown again, “research shows that non allergenic pillows harbour more mites after some months than feather pillows.“

Allergenic cleaning of mattresses, duvets and pillows is a common practice in mainland Europe, USA and Australia isn't it time our hotels caught up?

Wrekin Trust
Bugs The Wrekin Housing Trust is one of the largest independent housing providers in the Midlands with over 11,000 homes across the Telford and Newport Area.

As well as houses and bungalows the trust has scheme accommodation for the elderly, within each community there is a centre for meeting and socialising each centre has guest bedrooms for relatives to stay the night when visiting.

Earlier this year Wrekin Trust took the pro-active step of having all the mattresses in their guest bedrooms allergenically cleaned. Wrekin Trust understands that one of the root causes of allergies is the house dust mite. When in close contact as with pillows and mattresses, by products of the dust mites such as their excrement aggravate or cause allergic reactions.

With their guests health in mind they took the decision to have all the beds in the scheme centre guest rooms allergenically cleansed. This ensured the cause was removed from the critical areas, giving guests with allergies a symptom free, healthy and restful sleep. Another good reason to visit the healthy air of the Shropshire countryside.

Wrekin Trust employed Mattress Health one for the “Healthy Sleep Group” agents to treat their beds call 01952 240407 for further information.

Orkney Ferries - "take and ferry and explore"..
Bugs Orkney Ferries must give their passengers an excellent service if the trouble they take over their own staff is anything to go by. Operating between Orkney mainland and thirteen of the smaller islands. The sailings, mini cruises and tours give you easy access to the archaeological sites, the stunning scenery and abundant wildlife.

None of the Orkney ferries have passenger cabins as the maximum sailing time is only 2 hours but the staff do sleep on board and Orkney Ferries owners of the ferry Earl Sigurd have given all the crews bunks the Healthy Sleep Group treatment carried out by Kevin from Mattress Care. This may be the first occasion that ferry bunks have used the increasingly popular practice of removing dust mites, bacteria and fungi that thrive in all our beds.

Congratulations to Orkney ferries for their forward thinking practice. Some of the crew were so impressed by their new sleeping conditions they have now decided they will have their own beds treated at home. www.orkneyferries.co.uk
